Würzburg: ZINF 25th Anniversary Symposium

The Research Center for Infectious Diseases (ZINF, Zentrum für Infektionsforschung) of the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg is the oldest academic institution in Germany devoted to interdisciplinary research on infectious diseases across faculties. Founded in 1993, the ZINF has evolved into an internationally recognized and accredited institution that substantially contributes to the distinct biomedical profile of the University of Würzburg. Several external advisory groups such as the Science Council and the Mittelstraß-Commission of the Bavarian State Government have highlighted the scientific power of the ZINF as well as the quality of its research projects. In particular, the program for Young Investigator Groups has been commended to be an exemplary program for the promotion of young academics. Consequentially in 2009, the administration and council of the University of Würzburg have decided to institutionalize the ZINF as a central scientific facility of the university in order to secure resources and sustainability.

In addition, the Research Center for Infectious Diseases expresses a particular strength of the University of Würzburg: its interdisciplinary collaboration across faculties. The Faculty of Medicine with the university hospital as well as the Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy take an active part in the ZINF and contribute to the numerous third-party funded, interdisciplinary research networks.
